Keith A. Butcher

Keith Butcher is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. Butcher previously served as Superintendent Nicholas County Schools from 2014 to 2016, and as Superintendent of Fayette County Schools from 2012 until 2014, and from 2006-2012 he was Executive Director of the Regional Education Service Agency 1 (RESA 1) located in Beckley, West Virginia.  Prior to joining the RESA 1 staff, Keith served the West Virginia Department of Education in a variety of roles including West Virginia Title I Director and Executive Director of the Office of Instructional Services.  In 2007, he served as President of the National Association of State Title I Directors. 

Keith is a former Nicholas County elementary and gifted education teacher, and was an elementary school principal in both Nicholas and Braxton Counties.  Dr. Butcher earned a B.S. Degree in Music Education from Concord University, an M.A. Degree in Education Administration from West Virginia University, an Education Specialist Degree (Ed.S.) in Education Leadership at Marshall University in 2013, and earned a doctorate in Educational Leadership Studies (Ed.D.) at Marshall University in 2014. Butcher is currently an adjunct professor for Concord University located in Athens, WV.

Family

Keith and his wife Pam live in Summersville.  They have three children, Erin Elizabeth Maradei, Andrew Keith Butcher and Samuel Mark Butcher and grandaughter Hailey James Murphy. Erin is married to Jamin Maradei of Elkins, WV. The Butchers have served as foster parents for many children in the Nicholas County area and work to ensure that disadvantaged youth and adults are provided equal educational opportunities.

An avid musician, Keith recorded Appalachian Legacy, an album of Appalachian Folk Music and has performed at many folk festivals in West Virginia. He appeared for six seasons in Theatre West Virginia’s Hatfields and McCoys and Honey in the Rock as an actor, singer, and guitarist. He has appeared in many performances with the West Virginia Symphony Chorus and Opera Chorus, including Madame Butterfly, Faust, and Carmen.

Butcher returned to the Theater West Virginia stage to play the role of McCoy Clan leader, Rand’l McCoy, in the 2016 production of Hatfields and McCoys.
